No car? No problem!

Getting around by public transport to and from Orchard Farm is easy.

Take the bus to Ashford

Catch the 1X bus, from outside Stubbs restaurant on Canterbury Road, just a 5 minute walk from Orchard Farm. This bus will take you to Park Street in Ashford where you can shop at the Park Mall and County Square and enjoy some of the restaurants including Trattoria Romana, Amici, Buenos Aires Nights and Everest Inn. For a drink, check out Lowkey Taproom and Valerie’s Winebar or themed cocktail nights at Itica’s.  If you’re up for some games, Matches Bar offers pool and shuffle board. Elwick Place has a cinema and VR experiences and Revelation hosts music nights.

Ashford has plenty to offer children and there are often deals on bus prices in the school holidays. Little Land provides learning experiences and the Craftship offers crafting workshops, like pottery painting sessions starting at £5.

Victoria Park, a 15 minute walk from Park Street is  a brilliant day out for children with playparks, a seasonal wetland and a sensory garden where you can teach little ones about nature. Learning can be thirsty work so luckily there’s a lovely café there too.

Kennington to Canterbury by bus

On the opposite side of Canterbury Road to Orchard Farm you can catch the 1X bus to take you to Canterbury in about an hour. On the way, you could stop off at Chilham, a lovely village where films and TV shows have been filmed, including Black Mirror, Emma and the Canterbury Tales. The tiny village is jam packed with eateries including  two pubs, a tearoom and a wine bar that specialises in Kentish wines. Plus, there’s Badgers Hill Garden Centre with a café that offers afternoon tea.

It's also worth visiting Chilham Castle and its wonderful grounds. They have garden open days throughout the summer and it only costs £6 and is free for under 12s.

Closer to Canterbury is Chartham. Get off the bus at Howfield Lane if you have a toddler with boundless energy, they will certainly enjoy Under 1 Roof Insert link , a soft play centre.

Canterbury is the closest city to Orchard Farm, and you might enjoy visiting the Marlow Theatre, regularly to see a show or taste test some restaurants. I highly recommend the Good’s Shed  and the Corner House.

If beer is more your thing, then there’s an excellent taproom called Floc Brewery which is within Wincheap’s Industrial Estate. Pick up a delicious pint of alcohol-free sour beer and a large slice of pizza before heading to the Escape Room for a fun weekend day out.

Catch a train to London

It’s just 38 minutes from Ashford International station to London St Pancras and the station is a short walk from Park Street or an 8 minute bus ride, taking the number 10 or one of the ‘Little and Often’ buses.

If you prefer to drive to Ashford International, there’s plenty of parking space. The parking isn’t free there, but it is at Wye station, 8 minutes from Orchard Farm.  The train from Wye to London stops at Ashford International, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, London Bridge, Waterloo East and Charing Cross. It’s a fantastic commuting train if your job allows for flexible working as it’s cheaper than the high speed!

In the opposite direction, It’s just 16 minutes from Wye to Canterbury West and the train terminates at to the harbour town of Ramsgate.

If you’re a cyclist and want to travel to France, it’s just 15 minutes by train from Ashford to Folkestone West and a short cycle ride to join a specially adapted minibus for the 35 minute journey to Calais on Le Shuttle.

Travelling to Faversham

You can get to Faversham using the 666 buses, and  it’s about 30 minutes’ walk from Orchard Farm to the bus stop near Eastwell Towers and about another half an hour to get to the centre of Faversham. Enjoy the outside swimming pools or Shepherd Neame’s visitor centre where you can enjoy a beer tour and tasting session.

There’s nearly always a market on week-ends and you can combine your market shopping with a visit Creek Creative, an art gallery with craft shop and café. They host many creative workshops throughout the year too.

Cycling

Ashford is lucky to have many cycle paths that run through Kennington and into Ashford making commuting to the station from Orchard Farm very easy and sustainable. If mountain biking is more your thing, you might enjoy cycling up to King’s Wood and trying out some of the paths and downhill jumps that avid bikers have created. Spring is lovely time of the year to cycle there as you’ll be surrounded by the bluebells.

If you’d like to cycle to Canterbury, you can follow Route 18 near Wye which is mainly offroad and is part of the Pilgrim’s Cycle trail. I‘ve cycled this route and it is truly magical on a sunny day as you wind your way along the River Stour before you enter Canterbury. You can stop off at Catha’s Seat, named after Catharine 'Catha' Keegan, a cycling campaigner who lived in Wye, or have a swift half pint in The Artichoke in Chartham. There are lots of places to park your bike securely before you venture into Canterbury city centre.
