Getting active in 2024 in Ashford!

So many people encourage you to be a new you in a new year but this blog isn’t going to ask you to change but highlights how you can get active in Ashford and the surrounds throughout the year.

Get on a bike

One of the easiest ways to be active is to get cycling and you could invest in a new off-road bike from Ashford’s Activ Cycles and try the downhill trails at King’s Wood. Further afield, at Bedgbury Pinetum you’ll find cycle trails for everyone, from beginners to adrenaline junkies. Alternatively, head west from Ashford, towards Cranbrook and Sissinghurst, for the Sweetness Trail which takes you around Louisa Lake.

Ball Games

If a gentler indoor activity is more your thing, you might consider joining the Ashford Indoor Bowls Club close to Victoria Park. As well as enjoying a game of bowls in one of their leagues or tournaments, it’s a great place to meet people and socialise too in the bar and café.

Another indoor sporting opportunity can be found in the village of Wye, a 5 minute drive from Orchard Farm. A weekly table tennis session runs from 6.30 pm – 9 pm every Tuesday in the large village hall for people over 60.

If you haven’t heard of Pickleball yet, then you soon will! It’s a combination of tennis, table tennis and badminton and is one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S. You can learn to play in Ashford, Wye, Hawkinge and Lenham and your first session is free with the Eureka Pickleball Club.

Sport clubs

There are many sports clubs you can join in Ashford. In Kennington, very close to Orchard Farm, is the Ashford Hockey Club. They have six men’s teams, four women’s teams and junior squads too. As well as official matches against other clubs, they run training sessions and friendly matches through the season.

Just down the road but still within Kennington is the Rugby Football Club. They run teams for men, women and juniors, and even accommodate the under 6’s! Have a look at their fixtures if you’d prefer to be a spectator.

In Mersham, another village close to Ashford is Mersham’s Sports Club. They run a few different clubs including Archery, Cricket and Football. They also have three darts teams that frequently have fixtures in the Ashford five-aside darts league.

Active kids

If your children love being active there are so many opportunities for them to burn energy. Local haunts such as Flip Out is currently being upgraded to include Ninja Tag and another Tag game in Ashford is Battle Zone laser tag located in Kingsnorth. This is a themed World War two laser or nerf war game where teams shoot at each other over two floors. Finally, another family-friendly activity, that will get hearts pumping, is the newly opened Virtual Recreation Gaming Centre in Elwick Place. Their free roam room is suitable for 4 – 6 players and allows you to all enter the same virtual reality world via headsets.
