Open Day July 2022 Orchard Farm

On Saturday 9th July we held an open day St Mary’s Church Hall in Kennington with two site visits to Orchard Farm. We were keen to hear from our neighbours and prospective buyers about their reactions to our latest plans.

Many people expressed interest in building their next home at Orchard Farm, either by themselves or with help from professionals, in what will become the a green and active self-build community in Kent.

An exhibition in the hall illustrated our ideas and members of the team, including our two managing directors, Adam and Hans, answered questions and listened to people’s reactions and ideas. We also offered two site visits to Orchard Farm which were very popular, as were the refreshments! Visitors enjoyed apple and pear juice, and cherries from Perry Court Farm and apple and hazelnut biscuits from Zingiberri Bakery in Herne Bay.
It was good to meet everyone in person and to hear from people of many different ages from a wide variety of family groups; from young couples with babies and toddlers to older single people considering building a house next door to their grown-up child, to a family wanting to create a home that would accommodate the needs of their disabled child and another family who wanted to encourage their friends to build a home next to theirs.

The feedback was very positive. Comments included:

“Love the idea of shared space and the opportunities to future proof your own home, prioritising what matters to you most”

“Glad to see the emphasis on trees, especially fruit trees and hope as many existing trees as possible will be saved.”

“It will be great to have a good cycle route through natural landscapes into the centre of town and the station.”

“I would like to see houses to Passiv house standard so that it becomes an exemplary development.”

“I love the idea of a central communal space with lots of trees and natural landscapes.”

“We like the idea of a self-build adventure!”
